About
Moravian Church Settlements was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2015 as a cultural site.
Why it was inscribed
A unique testimony to a cultural tradition or civilisation; an outstanding example of architecture or landscape.
The Moravian Church, a Protestant community that arose in 18th-century Saxony, built settlements around the world to one common plan. The four listed are Herrnhut (Germany), Christiansfeld (Denmark), Gracehill (Northern Ireland, UK) and Bethlehem (Pennsylvania, USA); their streets, squares and buildings follow the same layout and reflect the church’s ideals of equality and self-government.
