Travel tips
Getting there: the park is north of the Arctic Circle and has no roads. Fly from Anchorage to Kotzebue, then use a small plane or an air-taxi floatplane to enter.
Park office: the park headquarters is in Kotzebue, where you can get information before leaving. Guides and air-taxi services run in summer.
Main sight: the Great Kobuk Sand Dunes are dunes inside the Arctic Circle covering about 65 square km; the Little Kobuk Sand Dunes and the Hunt River Dunes are smaller.
Caribou migration: from August to October the Western Arctic caribou herd moves south and crosses the Kobuk River. The routes and timing differ from year to year.
Boating: the Kobuk River is the main route; in summer people paddle kayaks or rafts downstream, and the trip through the park takes several days.
Season: June to September is best. Summer days are very long and mosquitoes are numerous in July and August. Winter is very cold and nearly empty.
Preparation: there are no facilities, trails or campgrounds, so bring all food, gear and water treatment. The place is remote, rescue is difficult, and wilderness experience is needed.
Where to stay: there is no lodging in the park, only camping where you choose; Kotzebue has a few hotels.
