Jinci lies at the foot of Xuanweng Hill southwest of Taiyuan, Shanxi, at the source of the Jin River, as a shrine to Tang Shuyu, founding lord of the state of Jin. The Northern Song Hall of the Holy Mother and the cross-shaped Flying Bridge over the Fish Pond before it are fine examples of Song architecture, and the Song painted statues of maids inside are strikingly lifelike. Old trees abound; the Zhou cypress and the Sui pagoda tree are both over a thousand years old.
