The Qinhuai River flows through southern Nanjing. Its inner stretch within the old city has been a lively quarter since the Six Dynasties, lined with the Confucius Temple, the Jiangnan Examination Hall and Wuyi Lane. Du Mu's poem "Mooring on the Qinhuai" ("Mist veils the cold water, moonlight veils the sand") describes this place; at night painted boats carry visitors along it.
