Maoshan is a famous Taoist mountain and the birthplace of the Shangqing school of Taoism, called “the first blessed land and the eighth grotto-heaven.” Temples such as the Jiuxiao Wanfu Palace and the Yuanfu Wanning Palace stand on the mountain amid dense woods, along with an open-air bronze statue of Laozi.
