The Orchid Pavilion lies at the foot of Lanzhu Hill southwest of Shaoxing. In the ninth year of Yonghe in the Eastern Jin, Wang Xizhi, Xie An and others gathered here for the spring purification rite, floating wine cups down a winding stream and composing poems. Wang's preface to their collection, the "Lantingji Xu", was later hailed as the finest work of running script. The present site dates from a Ming relocation and includes the Goose Pond, the Floating Cup Pavilion and the Imperial Stele Pavilion.
